Steamboat Springs Youth Soccer Association

Competitive Soccer Overview

The Steamboat Soccer Club (SSC) has been providing quality youth soccer programs since 1984. With over 800 participants each year, we serve players ranging in age from 4-19 years old and provide options for all levels of players, from the beginner to the advanced.

The Competitive Program is designed for players who are interested in playing a higher level of competition and under the guidance of a professional coach. The Competitve Program is for players ages U11 through to U19. Teams will play 9v9 (U11-U12) or 11v11 (U13-U18) format.

At the U11-U14 age groups, players must make a two season commitment (fall and spring) each fall season. The fall season runs from mid-August through the end of October. The spring season runs from the end of March through the Steamboat Mountain Soccer Tournament in mid-July, with the last two weeks of June off. For the U15-U18 age groups, players must make a one season commitment prior to the beginning of their specified season. (Girls in the Fall and Boys in the Spring.) Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with times varying throughout the season. Games are played in a home/away format with opponents from the Colorado Soccer Association (CSA) or the Mountain Region League (MRL.) In the Competitive Program, families are expected to be able to travel to the Denver area or mountain towns for away games. Home games will be played at Emerald Fields.

Practice is two times per week for U11 and U12 players, and three times per week for U13-U18. Practices run 90 minutes. Games are officiated by certified referees at this age group. There is a mandatory player placement process for all competitive teams which is held annually at the end of May. The club's priority is to foster athletic and social development of each player and team. Due to the small size of the SSC, teams are often comprised of players with a wide variety of abilities, goals, interests, and commitments.

SSC will focus on the development of the individual player using age appropriate training methods to create the 'complete player.' The complete player excels in four major areas of concentration: technical ability, tactical intelligence, physical attributes, and psychological elements.
By developing the complete player, the team will be made up of players who work together to achieve team goals.

Expectations

Player expectations
At these age groups, playing time is shared, but it is not equal. Playing time is at the coaches' discretion and takes into consideration absenteeism, tardiness, or general behavior issues in addition to skill of the player, quality of opponent, and competition. Players are expected to be at all games and training sessions. Players who are unable to attend a training session or match must let the coach know in advance. Players are expected to wear cleats, shin guards, shorts, socks, and a white or gray training shirt at all training sessions. Players are also expected to bring an inflated soccer ball and water to all training sessions and games. Competitive players age U11-U12 use a size four (4) soccer ball and players age U13 and older use a size five (5) soccer ball.

Parent expectations
Parents are encouraged to support their player and team in a fashion that breeds a positive and respectful learning environment. As such, it is imperative that coaches are able to teach/instruct the game to players in games and at practice. To best ensure a positive learning environment, parents should refrain from directional coaching on the sidelines while applauding positive plays and encouraging effort. After all, parents are the best role models for our players: please respect our players, coaches, opponents, and referees.

Work Deposits/Volunteers

As a non-profit organization, we depend on and greatly appreciate the support of our families who volunteer. The Steamboat Mountain Soccer Tournament income goes toward reducing fees for competitive players.

Our yearly fees are substantially less than most clubs in the state. There is a work deposit of $200 per athlete, with a two athlete per family maximum of $400 to encourage volunteerism. All work deposits are due at registration and will be held and not deposited until the required four hours/athlete shift is completed. Most volunteer shifts are needed at the Steamboat Mountain Soccer Tournament. We occasionally have other volunteer opportunities available.

Please call Jan DePuy in the soccer office to inquire about additional opportunities, 870-1520. Checks will be shredded on completion of your shift. Work deposit hours must be completed by July 31, 2019.
